Fragrant cinnamon, warm cardamom, ginger, and cozy spices come together in this homemade chai spice recipe. One little jar can bring incredible warmth and depth to everything from morning coffee to fall desserts.

As the spices mingle, their aromas become wonderfully fragrant, with cinnamon leading the way and cardamom adding its distinctive floral warmth. Ginger brings a gentle kick, while the remaining spices round everything out with layers of sweet, earthy flavor. There is no oven needed here, but the result is just as inviting as anything baking on a crisp autumn day.

The word chai simply means “tea” in Hindi and several other languages, while masala chai refers to tea prepared with a blend of spices. Traditional blends vary from family to family and region to region, often featuring spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and black pepper. This homemade chai spice blend captures those familiar warm flavors in an easy-to-use form.

Keep a jar in your spice cabinet and reach for it whenever you want to add a little extra warmth. Stir it into coffee, tea, oatmeal, or hot chocolate, or use it to flavor cakes, cookies, muffins, pancakes, and quick breads. It is especially lovely during the cooler months when cozy spices seem to belong in almost everything.

A good chai spice blend makes everyday recipes feel a little more comforting. Keep it close, and let that warm, fragrant mix of spices turn simple treats into something wonderfully cozy.

Original Recipe “Homemade Chai Spice Mix” by Jess from the blog Play Well with Butter
